Prehistoric Native American pottery seems to have originated with the Hohokam people of southern Arizona around 200 B.C. The Hohokams hunted, gathered and grew crops such as squash beans maize and corn. They lived in pit style houses and constructed elaborate irrigation and canal systems.
Their pottery craft spread to other peoples in the Southwest, the Mogollon (Mug-ee-on), Anasazi and the Mimbres, reaching the areas of Southern Utah and Colorado around 3-400 A.D.
